I hate the mosquitoes
... because Vivi can't spend as much time in the backyard/patio as she should. She LOVES eating, I mean playing with, leaves. Such a sporty girl.

We have hardly been out in the backyard since early June, around the time L broke her arm in fact! They are horrible. I decided to spray us all one day a few weeks ago but it didn't really help. Mysteriously, they don't bite me this year, but everyone else suffered greatly.

The Jerusalem artichokes are THIS BIG. They bloomed and are beautiful! I totally didn't expect that the most successful crop of all would result from those sad, ginger-looking bits in a plastic bag that Mollie picked up for free from the co-op last year. We're still getting peppers, some sad tomatoes, and basil (which is tasting sort of bitter by now) but the sunchokes are triumphant.

Welcome, October
My blogging delinquency is disgraceful. And I don't even have the excuse that I am uploading photos to Facebook! It's been busy here, but in a weird, sort of isolating way. The weekdays are all about the same: I go to work and Lilah goes to school, and M and A hit the library storytimes, grocery store, playgrounds, museums, playdates, etc. Then we come home and try to make it through the evening hours. I can occasionally get work done in the evening after Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It's getting darker earlier and earlier these days and it's COLD at night, which is a bit depressing. But October is a favorite month as I love all things orange like pumpkins and apple cider (sort of orange) and circus peanuts and living room paint. And the Fall Festival begins next week!!! And then we're off to Maryland to finally meet cousin James over fall break!
Here the pirate has apparently just eaten. Probably hummus.

In an attempt to get through one particular early evening, we crossed that money savin' bridge to Henderson, KY. I went to Simons to look for shoes that fit my orthotics (no success). I'm all about comfortable footwear these days. Anyway, this is an amusing photo that Lilah took. Looks like Menachem has gone fishin' (just thinking about Kentucky makes me drop my final g's).

Everyone loves a swing.

talent
There's a lot of extra noise around the house as Vivi beats her food particles into submission before eating them, slams toys on the floor for no apparent reason, and plays with the various toy keyboards we have. This is the least annoying one because it has no batteries. Look how she flips it over and plays the other side!

back to school again
Pretty exciting times around here. I've been back to school for a week and Vivi has been sick basically that whole time (ear infection). It's been a rough week for all of us as a result. Even in sickness, V is a cutester. Sometimes we tie ribbons 'round her head.

The Sunday before school started we were the first ones at the zoo on a Sunday morning. I still hadn't been to Amazonia because the last time I was at the zoo (pregnant and huffing and puffing) Lilah wouldn't go in. I can't believe I hadn't been to the zoo in so long. Anyway, Amazonia is cool, and L enjoyed pushing Vivi around, as usual.

Meanwhile, L fights about going to school in the mornings. She says she doesn't like it (although she usually reports that she had a good/fun day when she returns). WE certainly like it, and it seems that she's learning new things all the time. Now we all know the sign language for "can I go to the bathroom?" which is handy; I should teach it to my own students. Her drawings are much more complex/interesting than before, and she's getting a better grip on the lower case. Sometimes she eats at least part of her lunch, although we screwed up on Monday and sent her with a granola bar that contained nuts (no nuts allowed on premises). She and Vivi are already good friends I think and L is extremely cute playing with her.
